Perform a factory reset using recovery mode
If you've forgotten your device's passcode and you're unable to unlock it, or your device is displaying a message that it's disabled, you can reset your device using recovery mode. You'll need access to a Windows computer with iTunes installed or a Mac to follow these steps. Please note that resetting the device will remove all of its content, data and settings. You should ensure that you have backed up your device before resetting so you can restore its data after setting it up again. If your device isn't backed up, you will not be able to retrieve its data after resetting. For help backing up your device, see here. | |
1. | Make sure your device isn't connected to the computer yet. Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the power off slider appears. (The buttons will vary according to device, please tailor accordingly) |
2. | Swipe the power off slider to turn off the device. |
3. | Using a compatible cable, connect your device to the computer while pressing and holding the side button. Keep holding the side button until you see the recovery mode screen. |
4. | Locate your device on the computer. If you're using a Windows PC or a Mac running macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier, you'll need to open iTunes. If you're using macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, you'll need to open a Finder window. Once you've located your device, you should see a window giving you the option to restore or update your device. Select Restore. |
5. | You will be reminded that restoring your device will remove all data and settings from your device. If you're happy to continue, select Restore and Update. |
6. | The latest software version will be downloaded and installed on your device. Please note: if the download takes longer than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you will need to perform the previous steps again to re-enter recover mode. Be sure not to disconnect your device until the restoration process has finished. Your device will restart once the restore is completed. |
7. | You can either set up your device again as new or restore your data from a backup. See here for help restoring data. |
